Battle-scarred Apple Computer Inc. lost its chief executive yesterday when Gilbert F. Amelio resigned after a confrontation with the company's board of directors over the company's faltering performance.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who had recently rejoined the company as a "strategic adviser," will take on an expanded role as the company looks for a new chief executive, the company announced. Apple's vice president of technology, Ellen Hancock, who was brought into the company by Amelio, also resigned.
