Battle-scarred Apple Computer Inc. lost its chief executive
yesterday when Gilbert F. Amelio resigned after a confrontation with
the company's board of directors over the company's faltering
performance.
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who had recently rejoined the
company as a "strategic adviser," will take on an expanded role as
the company looks for a new chief executive, the company announced.
Apple's vice president of technology, Ellen Hancock, who was brought
into the company by Amelio, also resigned.
The management turmoil occurs just 18 months after Amelio
