U.S. soccer attention will be riveted on sold-out RFK Stadium
Sunday for MLS Cup '97, Major League Soccer's second championship
game in which defending champion D.C. United will meet the Colorado
Rapids. The league's showcase event, which will attract more than
56,000 fans, was sold out six days before kickoff and will be
televised live on ABC.
The response to that game or, for that matter, any important
MLS contest, will be one more indicator in determining whether
professional soccer ever becomes a mainstream sport in this country.
Previous attempts, the first in 1967, to launch big-time U.S.
