Article: Study discourages city funds; Park East developments could hurt other projects, it says

Don't expect those big empty lots in Milwaukee's Park East area to be filled in with buildings for several years. And don't think that city financial assistance should be piled on to speed up that process.

Those were main messages from a new study on downtown development, released Wednesday by Mayor Tom Barrett's administration.

Barrett's Department of City Development commissioned the study because of several pending developments, including hotel projects, seeking city financing. Barrett said the study will help officials, including aldermen, decide which developments should receive city grants, which are typically repaid through the new developments' property taxes.
