Article: Clothes peg sales soar as dryers take tumble

THEY were once a common sight in British gardens

billowing sheets drying in the breeze on laundry day.

But over the past 30 years the availability of ever cheaper tumble dryers has consigned washing lines to childhood memories.

However, new figures suggest that "organic" clothes drying may be making a dramatic comeback because of global warming.

Asda says it has seen a massive leap in sales of clothes pegs and washing lines this year.

Over the past four months alone it has sold 1.2 million pegs, up 1,400 per cent on last year.

It is thought to be the first time that peg sales have increased significantly in almost half a century.
