"Sweetness and Light"
(Zero Hour)
As the singer-songwriter of '80s quartet the Dream Syndicate,
Steve Wynn spent several years exploring the semi-charted recesses
of the Velvet Underground. The resemblance ultimately upstaged his
band's other attributes, so as a solo artist Wynn has been careful
not to become so closely associated with the style of any single
precursor. That doesn't mean, however, that he's developed a sound
of his own. On his new "Sweetness and Light," Wynn skillfully but
unsurprisingly draws on the Byrds, Motown, the Kinks, the Beach Boys
and other '60s acts.
