I have a friend who, upon leaving a reporting job in Grand
Rapids, Mich., was presented with a key to the city. He never said
if they later changed the locks.
What to do: I once took the cheapest flight I could find from
Mitchell International Airport and ended up just across the pond in
Grand Rapids. But if the cheap ticket was the point of the exercise,
Grand Rapids turned out to be an unexpected bonus in the bargain.
Michigan's second-largest city has history (think Watergate burglary
tools), fine lodging and dining (think the only 5-diamond restaurant
in the state) and art (think "The Thinker").
