OAKMONT, Pa. -- Angel Cabrera said he wasn't able to tame Oakmont
Country Club's brutal course.
That hardly mattered, though, because the 37-year-old from
Argentina tamed the rest of the field in the 107th U.S. Open --
including the world's No. 1 player.
Cabrera became the fourth straight foreign-born player, and the
first from Argentina, to win the U.S. Open when he shot a 1-under-
par 69, then withstood challenges from Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk
down the stretch Sunday to capture his first major championship. His
5-over 285 total was one stroke better than Woods (72) and Furyk
(70).
The only other Argentinian to win a major was Roberto de Vicenzo,
who took the 1967 British Open.
