It's been a bottleneck for years: the narrow, two-lane stretch
of Chain Bridge Road that snakes through Fairfax City.
And for just as long, officials have talked about easing
traffic congestion there by building a western bypass around Route
123 and the city's historic district.
That idea finally may be closer to realization, according to
Fairfax City and some Fairfax County officials. A joint city and
county committee, assisted by the Virginia Department of
Transportation, has come up with more than a dozen options to create
a four-lane route that would let drivers loop around Fairfax City,
skirting it to the west instead of staying on Route 123 through the
middle of town.
