There are about 1,400 administrative law judges in the federal
government, and they're pretty powerful.
They hand down rulings on whether Americans are entitled to
Social Security benefits, disability benefits and other federal
services. They rule in regulatory disputes and determine whether
admiralty, banking, trade and other laws have been violated.
As federal jobs go, they're among the best. Congress has granted
the judges a large degree of independence to insulate them from
political pressures at the agencies where they work. The jobs come
with a lifetime appointment, and the pay is not bad, either. In the
Washington area, salaries range from $115,151 to $154,600.
