MEAT bred from cloned animals could be on sale in Europe within
two years, it emerged today.
Scientists meeting in London were told that American authorities
are expected to approve the offspring of cloned animals being sold
as meat before the end of the year, without any extra labelling.
The EU has begun discussions about allowing cloned animals to be
used in the human food chain, and today British experts said a
similar situation could occur here.
"Labelling needs to be handled very carefully, as public
acceptance is key to this technology," said Chris Warkup of Genesis
Faraday, a government-funded research institute based at the Roslin
Institute, where Dolly the sheep was created.
