Pay Phone Rate Rising to 35 Cents; Bell Atlantic Acts After Federal Law Removes Price Ceiling

It's settled: 35 cents will be the going price for a local call from a pay phone.

Bell Atlantic Corp., owner of more than two-thirds of the pay phones in the Washington area, announced yesterday that it would begin charging that amount, instead of a quarter.

Many smaller pay phone companies in the area already had raised the price, taking advantage of a federal law that removed price ceilings on pay phones on Oct. 7. But Bell Atlantic had held back, saying it wasn't sure what it would do. Now it is.
