Sometimes you would swear that horses have a sense of humour. For just as a book detailing his colourful, swashbuckling life to date was published, Sergeant Cecil produced the worst performance of his career by trailing in last in the Ascot Gold Cup. Happily, his trainer, Rod Millman, can produce a wry smile at the sod's law scenario - "He did rather drop us all in it, didn't he?" - and, the old equine warrior being none the worse for last month's shocker, can move on to the next task.

That may be back at Ascot in 10 days' time. Unusually for one perceived as an out-and-out stayer, Sergeant Cecil holds an entry in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the 12-furlong summer ...
