IHAVE attended several Dellums events in the past six months at
which someone has commented that "This is the first time an Oakland
mayor has ..."
This caused me to acknowledge that we are making some real
history in our corner of urban America.
Recently, the mayor sat for three hours with the Oakland school
board listening intently to youngsters and teachers as they conveyed
their educational hopes, dreams, disappointments and frustrations.
One longtime Oakland board member said, "I have been on this school
board for many years. This is the first Oakland mayor who has sat
down with us like this."
And a teacher said, "It means so much that he wants to work with
us instead of making ...
