Capt. Matt Burton, a 35-year-old Concord resident, and Scott
Desmond, a 37-year-old Brentwood resident, of the Contra Costa Fire
District were killed battling a house fire in Montalvin Manor early
Saturday morning, along with two residents of the house.
Some heard a pop. Others described a "whoosh."
Then, in a span of heartbeats, all saw the flames blast through
the window. Crews working outside knew this routine house fire had
taken an unfathomable turn for the worse.
Before the ash settled on Michele Drive, two of their number
joined two lifeless residents -- Delbert Moore, 67, and his wife,
Gayle, 62 -- beneath blankets before the home.
Burton and Desmond were the Contra Costa Fire ...
