NATIONAL Express is closing its Mayfair headquarters and laying
off 100 senior managers as it counts the 23 million cost of an
unsuccessful campaign to remain the countrys largest train operator.
The company has had a wretched time in the recent round of rail
refranchises, losing the lucrative Midland Mainline service out of
St Pancras as well as the Gatwick Express, Silverlink Metro services
around north London, the Silver-link County franchise out of Euston
and Central Trains in the Midlands.
Its failure to land other big licences including CrossCountry and
South West Trains will reduce its trains business by up to two-
