SAN FRANCISCO -- The deeper into the summer the Giants get, the more Barry Zito looks like his old self.

Zito didn't earn the decision Wednesday as the Giants lost 4-2 in 10 innings to the Chicago Cubs at AT&T Park. But he pitched eight more solid innings in what continues to be a bounce-back August for the veteran left-hander.

Zito was largely a disappointment in his first four months with the Giants after signing a $126 million, seven-year deal to come across the Bay from the A's. But in five starts this month, the former Cy Young Award winner has a 2.76 ERA and has three times yielded two or fewer runs.
