Article: Genentech reapplies for Avastin approval Bay Area biotech firm wants to OK drug for breast cancer treatment

Genentech Inc. announced Friday that it has resubmitted an application seeking approval of its blockbuster cancer drug Avastin for use with chemotherapy in initial treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

The South San Francisco-based biotechnology company had hoped to have the drug already approved for such usage, but last September the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had questions about the analysis methods and sought resubmission, said Shiv Kapoor, analyst with Ferris, Baker Watts in San Francisco.

"I'm hopeful that this data will be approved. And if it does, it's going to reinvigorate Avastin sales," said Kapoor, who has a "buy" rating on Genentech.
