Article: United Airlines may sell SF base

United Airlines, one of San Mateo County's largest employers, said Friday it may sell a stake in, or all, of its maintenance operations to outside investors to raise capital for upgrading and expanding the division.

That includes the airline's huge maintenance base at San Francisco International Airport, where some 3,000 United mechanics repair aircraft and another 2,000 or more support workers are employed.

"We're looking at bringing in third-party people who can invest in the maintenance business," Jean Medina, a spokeswoman for the airline's Chicago-based parent, UAL Corp., said. She wouldn't detail how large a stake UAL might sell or with whom discussions are being held. The company ...
