Article: Taking Sides on Neighborhood Pride; In Chicago, Streetscape's Gay Designation Divides a Community

When the city's transportation department this fall announced a streetscape project for North Halsted Street that included references to the street's history as the heart of the local gay community, it touched off a debate between residents and commercial property owners that comes down to this: "Who's neighborhood is it, anyway?"

Over the past two months the office of Mayor Richard M. Daley has received hundreds of letters and petitions with thousands of signatures both supporting and denouncing the project. Two public meetings, described as "loud" and "heated" by participants, have been held and the press has had a field day.
