It's Lambeau Field's 50th birthday party, the golden anniversary
for the NFL's oldest venue.
It will be a year-long celebration, but the Packers will light
the first candle Sunday when they open the season at home against
the Philadelphia Eagles.
The official birthday is Sept. 29. That was the date in 1957 when
the Packers opened their new stadium with a 21-17 victory over the
archrival Chicago Bears. It was one of just three victories in a
dismal season in which the Packers finished 3-9.
Actually, the stadium is 50 years old, but the name is just 42.
The name was changed from City Stadium to Lambeau Field in 1965, to
honor the memory of co-founder and longtime head coach Earl "Curly" ...
