WHEN the Portuguese police turned on the McCanns and made them
formal suspects in the Madeleine case Gerry McCann was unequivocal:
"We are being absolutely stitched up," he said.
The phrase seems to fit perfectly the unfolding sequence of
events that began when Kate McCann was subjected to an 11-hour
interrogation last Thursday. Since then a stream of information
about so-called evidence has poured out of Praia da Luz, none of it
official but all aimed at constructing a case that says the McCanns
killed their daughter and disposed of her body.
