The ancient Greeks invented democracy, so it seems only fitting that presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama is making a play for the Greek vote.

At a fund-raiser Wednesday night, state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias hosted nearly 200 prominent Greek Americans and other supporters who paid $1,000 to $2,300 a person to attend a cocktail party at Costas restaurant, 340 S. Halsted.

"I just came back from Greece, and everybody knows Obama," says the treasurer's mom, Anna Giannoulias. "They adore him. If he was to run there, he'd have 90 percent of the vote."
