OAKLAND -- On Friday, hours after the unexpected resignation of
State Administrator Kimberly Statham, the school district's chief of
staff was tapped to lead the district -- at least, temporarily.
Vince Matthews, 43, was an area superintendent for the San Diego
schools before he came to Oakland in May. Like Statham, he was a
fellow with the Broad Academy for aspiring superintendents.
Matthews will step in as interim administrator after Statham's
departure Sept. 27. Statham, 48, stepped down to spend more time
with her family, who live in Maryland.
State Superintendent Jack O'Connell, who made the appointment,
spoke highly of his choice. Matthews is the third leader O'Connell
