A book club, in theory, should be oh-so simple and civilized. Gather the intellectuals in your life, discuss literature and sip fine wine. In practice, it can be anything but, as loudmouths dominate the discussion, someone doesn't finish (or start) the book, wine is downed by the box and the same member bullies others into reading his selections.

The quirks and quandaries of book clubs will hit the big screen Friday when "The Jane Austen Book Club," a movie based on a book about book clubs discussed by many book clubs, is released. (See Movies Friday for Roger Ebert's review.)
