THE LAST time I walked into Harry's Bar in Venice, I walked
straight out. The only way to enjoy this fabled restaurant on Calle
Vallaresso near Piazza San Marco is to be Orson Welles (tricky) or
known by the faithful staff well enough to get a good table and the
"Venetian discount" a bill for inhabitants and "friends" that has
at least a third off. I was just another tourist.
To create your own Harry's at home, make these irresistible
sandwiches, serve them wrapped snugly in a small white paper napkin
covering the bottom half of the sandwich and with a glass of Soave.
Olive oil is used to fry the bread which gives a spurious whiff of
healthiness.
