Article: Troubled Berkeley Housing Authority to start new waiting list

After tossing out a public housing waiting list with 5,000 names, the Berkeley Housing Authority will make applications available for a new list starting Friday.

The applications are for 61 three- and-four-bedroom units owned by the authority with rents subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Despite protests from people who had been on the previous list for as long as eight years, the Housing Authority board of directors voted in August to start a new list after it found the previous one was so badly kept that staff could not determine who is eligible for housing assistance and who is not.
