The U.S. attorney for the District broke ranks with the city's
leadership by saying that her office, not a specially appointed
inspector general, will lead an investigation into allegations of
criminal misconduct in the D.C. police department.
In a letter dated Dec. 15 and sent to D.C. financial control
board Chairman Andrew F. Brimmer and members of a police management
oversight committee, acting U.S. Attorney Mary Lou Leary said she
did not agree with the approach to rooting out suspected corruption
being taken by other members of the committee.
