Though Chevy Chase Bank is the largest banking institution
based in the Washington region, it has been tough for the company to
capitalize on its home-grown distinction in the past several years.
The thrift, which has assets of $4.9 billion, has been
overshadowed by two larger competitors in the Washington market --
NationsBank Corp. and First Union Corp. -- particularly as those
Charlotte-based companies have aggressively expanded here. Chevy
Chase also has faced a Justice Department investigation that ended
with the agency accusing the bank and its subsidiary, B.F. Saul
Mortgage Co., of lending discrimination because the bank -- based in
