We Americans are the best-informed people in the world. If it's a
question about world news, politics or whether our favorite beer
tastes great or is less filling, we usually know the answer.
But sometimes I think we know too much because we're told too
much. Consider the side-effect warnings for medicines advertised on
TV.
There was a time when we took medicines without knowing what they
cured, let alone their side effects. For example, my grandmother's
medicine cabinet always had two medicinal items: one was Pertussin,
and the other was something called Fletcher's Castoria. Both were
thick, dark liquids that looked like something you might drain from
