They discussed Colin L. Powell, the Million Man March, sexism
in the black community, the criminal justice system, health care,
mobilizing black voters, job creation and education.
But what seemed paramount to African American leaders who
gathered yesterday at the Washington Hilton and Towers for a series
of brainstorming sessions was this: How do you motivate young blacks
who do not see the political system as a mechanism for change?
"Their issues are, `Can I get a job? How will I be able to use
the education I have?' " said S.A. "Shep" Wilbun, a Tennessee county
commissioner and president of the National Black Caucus of Local
Elected Officials.
