Burger King Corp. will announce plans today to build 25
restaurants in inner-city neighborhoods, including some in
Washington, in partnership with La-Van Hawkins, a leading African
American fast-food franchisee, according to Hawkins and company
officials.
The restaurants, to be located in the District, Chicago,
Detroit and New York City, will be operated by Hawkins' new company,
La-Van Hawkins Urban City Foods, based in Baltimore.
Over the past five years, Hawkins has led efforts by another
fast-food company, Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc., to establish
outlets in inner cities as a model of urban economic empowerment.
