MONDAY Tributes were paid to Marcel Marceau, left, the mime
artiste who has died aged 84.
Among those influenced by him were Michael Jackson and Rudolf
Nureyev. Wendy Alexander accused the SNP and the Conservatives of
combining to bring about the break-up of the UK. Gordon Brown spoke
for 65 minutes at the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. A poll
in The Sun gave Labour an eight-point lead over the Conservatives,
fuelling speculation of a general election in November.
England was hit by a series of freak tornadoes. Homes as far
apart as Hampshire to Lincolnshire were damaged and trees were
uprooted in the 80mph winds.
