Article: Maria Elena Gonzalez Mederos, Activist for Cuban Causes, Dies

Maria Elena Gonzalez Mederos, 63, a government statistician who was an activist for human rights in Cuba, died of cardiac arrest Feb. 19 at a hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A resident of Washington, she was vacationing there when stricken.

Ms. Gonzalez was a trustee and treasurer of Of Human Rights, an organization that disseminates information about human rights in Cuba. She had worked in campaigns for the release of political prisoners in Cuba.

In 1989, she translated into English "The Bell of Dawn," a book of poems written by Ernesto Diaz Rodriguez, a Cuban prisoner for 22 years until he was released.
