Article: Purchase of Lonely Planet gives BBC global brand

The Lonely Planet isn't alone anymore.

To help kick its multimedia and television prowess into full gear, the travel guidebook company Lonely Planet announced Monday that it has reached an agreement to be bought by the British Broadcasting Corp. The United States headquarters of the company is in Oakland. The company that sprung from a single book written by married couple Tony and Maureen Wheeler, "Across Asia on the Cheap," about 34 years ago will now have the backing of a $1.6 billion giant.

BBC Worldwide, which sells programs, operates TV channels, and sells books, DVDs and magazines, will use Lonely Planet to add new travel information to its television programs and Web sites. For ...
