When food critics scrutinize one of America's favorite foods --
pizza -- they invariably gravitate to family-operated shops that
always seem to trace their roots back to Pompeii or the brick ovens
of Don Raffaele Esposito, the godfather of the modern-day pie.
But many pizza fans don't eat their pizza in those kinds of
places. These days, chain restaurants such as Pizza Hut, Domino's
and Pizzeria Uno serve up much of the 90 acres of pizza Americans
consume daily.
We set out to discover the best assembly-line pizza pie in the
Boston area. We chose a combination of home-grown chains and
