A Sudanese military transport plane crashed Monday evening in
a desert region 25 miles south of Khartoum, killing all 91 people
aboard, including several high-ranking provincial officials,
Sudanese state-run television reported late tonight.
The newscast showed wreckage of the U.S.-made Hercules C-130
scattered over a wide area of featureless terrain, but it did not
suggest a cause of the crash. It said the four-engine,
propeller-driven aircraft was approaching Khartoum after a 220-mile
flight from El Obeid in central Sudan when air traffic controllers
suddenly lost radio and radar contact with it.
