Article: Town board sued by supermarket Star Market says Needham planners wrong in denying use of Carter Co. building site

NEEDHAM -- In what town officials describe as the biggest development battle in Needham's recent history, Star Market's parent company is taking the Planning Board to court for permission to build a large supermarket and drugstore in the former headquarters of the William Carter Co.

In November, the Planning Board rejected the controversial proposal to replace the three-story brick Carter building on Highland Avenue with a Star Market Plus and a pharmacy. If built, the complex would be the largest single development in Needham.

Neighbors of the Needham Heights site had lobbied aggressively against the plan, which they said would cause traffic gridlock, noise and air pollution. More ...
