Article: A Raucous Reunion for Volunteers, Animals; After Regaining Right to Run Shelter, Washington Humane Society Returns to Cats and Dogs

Dogs barked, people yelled and everyone seemed perfectly happy. In something of a homecoming at the District's animal shelter, Washington Humane Society staff and a dozen longtime volunteers greeted each other yesterday.

They were working together for the first time since the city had given the management contract for the shelter to a group called Animal Link Inc. Because of a financial and contractual dispute, the Washington Humane Society in October gave up the contract it had held for 15 years with the city, and the new group took over. The volunteers refused to work with Animal Link, saying the management was disorganized and the animals ill kept.
