Saddam Hussein's support inside and outside his war-ravaged nation
is eroding. His provincial cities have been rocked by insurrection.
Disgruntled soldiers soon will return with accounts of the
humiliating rout the Iraqi leader's armies suffered. Opponents in
Iran and Syria are calling for his ouster.
But still he hangs on.
So formidable is the power of Saddam Hussein's multilayered secret
police and so brutal has been his treatment of opponents, including
the reported use of chemical weapons, that he is secure for now,
according to analysts.
"The capital was wobbly for a few days," said Kurt Campbell, a
military affairs specialist at Harvard's Kennedy School of
