Article: Undercover officer leaves $80,000 trail

DES PLAINES, Ill. -- An undercover officer heading for a drug bust lost $80,000 in cash to be used to buy drugs when he inadvertently left the money on top of his car and drove away, police say.

Finders will not be keepers, police said in this suburb northwest of Chicago.

Police Chief Kenneth Randolph said Monday that keeping the lost cash would be a crime and that violators would be prosecuted.

"If someone is sitting in their home and afraid to turn the money in, we want our money back," Randolph said.
