In the beginning, there was Charlie's: a 13-stool, four-table
establishment tucked into Boston's South End, a place where folks
double-parked outside and breakfast was available all day. That was
exactly 10 years, or 512 restaurants, ago: The first Cheap Eats.
Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe still exists today -- unchanged, even in
its mission to popularize turkey hash. And we're still here, as
well. In addition to the four persons who currently write Cheap
Eats, five others have been briefly on the case since March 1981.
These nine have visited cheap eateries in all six New England states,
reporting on such American fare as Chicago hotdogs, Philadelphia
cheese steak and New Orleans gumbo. They ...
