Two weeks ago I reported on my experience with the cabbage
soup diet, a one-week program currently dominating the American diet
hit parade.
It seemed to hit a nerve.
Cabbage sales at the Tenleytown Fresh Fields went up 25
percent over the previous week.
Readers clogged the phone lines sharing stories of their
successes and failures on the program. Some claimed absolute (and
conflicting) knowledge about the diet's origins. Others demanded
infinitesimal details about its rules. One total stranger
unashamedly tracked me down over the weekend to ask if she could use
butter on her vegetables. (Lest anyone else be tempted to inquire,
