Saturn is slowly coming into view -- not the second-largest planet
of our solar system but the automobile.
Saturn, of course, is the ultimate in what has come to be known as
"the clean sheet of paper" approach to building cars. When Roger
Smith directed that General Motors reinvent the automobile by first
inventing a whole new car company, conventional wisdom said he was
nuts -- and this writer subscribed to that conventional wisdom, and
still does. It didn't make any sense to saddle the corporation with
such enormous expense when what was really needed was to change the
corporate attitude about what to build, how to build and how to treat
