Massachusetts legislators yesterday began considering a state
senator's proposal to lengthen the school year by 40 days -- an
effort, its sponsor said, to ensure that students "get to the back of
the book" by year's end and become competitive with students abroad.
However, Sen. Michael J. Barrett (D-Cambridge) and supporters of
a longer school year, including Mayor Flynn and Gov. Weld, have been
unable to guarantee a source of revenue needed to pay for the
ambitious plan. Anticipating possible resistance, Flynn suggested
that voters might pass a ballot referendum to lengthen the school
year.
And Barrett conceded to the Legislature's joint committee on
Education, Arts and the Humanities ...
