Bank of Boston's high-stakes bid for the failed Bank of New
England remained a decided longshot last week, raising questions
about what chairman Ira Stepanian will do if this golden opportunity
slips through his grasp.
Stepanian and his top strategists, chief financial officer Peter
Manning and Ira Jackson, head of Bank of Boston's external affairs,
have campaigned for Bank of New England as if it were a fight for
survival. Battling the odds, they attacked on all fronts, rolling
out a massive lobbying and public relations campaign, telling anyone
who would listen that a merger of their bank and Bank of New England
would be best for Massachusetts and best for New England.
