Article: State seeks to recover $7m in toxic waste fines

Environmental Affairs Secretary Susan Tierney yesterday announced an initiative to recover up to $7 million from private firms and individuals responsible for toxic waste violations at about 500 sites across the state.

Tierney and Commissioner Daniel Greenbaum of the Department of Environmental Management said they have sent letters to 700 violators giving them a 21-day amnesty period, during which they will be permitted to pay their fines. Violators who volunteer to pay delinquent fines during the three-week period would have their penalties discounted from 25 to 45 percent, depending on the size of the fine.
