As the reporting methods of Reagan-razer Kitty Kelley undergo
public dissection, the sharpest American tale of journalistic pursuit
is celebrating its 50th anniversary. "Citizen Kane," Orson Welles'
great American art film, premiered in New York City on May 1, 1941,
amid a rage of curiosity about its links to the life of press mogul
William Randolph Hearst. With "rosebud" its code word for truth,
"Citizen Kane" took a reporter named Jerry Thompson on the same
American search that Kelley purportedly took: into the all-too-human
heart of a muddy American icon.
"Citizen Kane" (which will screen Wednesday at the Wang Center and
then move on to Cambridge's Brattle Theater for a weeklong run) ...
