Coping with the stark reality of Massachusetts' increasingly
cash-starved public schools, parents and educators in the NorthWest
Weekly region are weighing the long-term benefits of extending the
180-day school year against the immediate need to overcome the fiscal
crises wracking their schools.
Superintendents, teachers and parents interviewed last week said
they supported the concept of extending by 40 days the school year,
currently the shortest of any industrialized nation. However, some
stressed that it is difficult, even inappropriate, to dwell on such a
costly venture, when teachers and programs are being cut, and some
school buildings face closure.
