The curators of a Palestinian film series that has been
characterized as pro-intifadah withdrew their work from the Institute
for Contemporary Art just a day before it was set to open because the
ICA, bowing to pressure from a former board member, decided to
sponsor a panel discussion on Arab-Israeli affairs in conjunction
with the film.
ICA board member Steven Grossman resigned his post and argued that
a discussion was necessary to put the films into a fairer context and
to give a more balanced picture of the situation in the Mideast. The
curators of the films responded that the ICA decision to follow
Grossman's recommendation politicized their works and amounted to
censorship.
