Like a guy with a bad back who is asked to carry a 200-pound drum,
Brady Enterprises was straining under the weight of its workers'
compensation bill.
The Weymouth food company has only 88 employees, but this year
it was facing a $200,000 premium for workers' compensation, an
insurance program for injured employees. Co-owner William Brady
complained to his insurance company but got no satisfaction. "I told
them, `I cannot afford this luxury. There has to be a better way.'
"
At Tobey Hospital in Wareham, vice president Wayne Woodford
watched the hospital's workers' compensation bill grow to $250,000
from $65,000 in six years, even though the hospital's record on
